Matthews, N.C. – Presbyterian Hospital Matthews has added Amy Rivers to its team as the hospital’s first cancer patient navigator.  As registered nurses with special training in oncology, cancer navigators are a valuable resource in patient care; their primary function is to make the cancer journey as seamless as possible for patients. 

River’s role begins shortly after diagnosis.  She consults with the patient and provides information on available programs such as support groups, counseling, symptom management and the Second Opinion Cancer Clinic.  She also coordinates physician appointments, provides a familiar face at pre-surgery/surgery, and answers questions and offers support.

“It’s difficult for patients to see past their diagnosis, and that’s where I come in,” said Rivers. “I take the burden of healthcare logistics off the patient, allowing them to focus on what is most important—survivorship.”  Rivers has a rich history in both hospital-based and outpatient care, most recently serving as the nurse manager at Matthews Hematology & Oncology Associates.

Rivers joins a team of seven cancer navigators at Presbyterian Cancer Center, with the goal of ensuring every newly diagnosed patient has access to a cancer navigator during treatment.
